Prospective MP For Chesterfield, Ben Flook, launched his campaign to make St. George's Day a National Bank Holiday - having spent the afternoon at the Holme Hall Inn.
Despite being the Patron Saint of many countries, including Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Portugal and parts of Catalonia in Spain as well as England - and being a state holiday in Rio De Janeiro in Brazil, St. George's Day is not a public holiday in England.
St George was a brave roman solider who slayed a dragon during the third century, according to legend. He was also revered as a martyr for the Christian faith and lost his life in 303AD protesting against their persecution.
As Prospective MP For Chesterfield, Ben Flook stated:
As the Patron Saint of England, Saint George's Day should be an opportunity for our nation to come together to celebrate our Patron Saint. This would bring England into line with Ireland and Northern Ireland - where St Patrick’s Day on March 17 is a national holiday.
